Imagine missing school simply because you don’t have access to basic sanitary products. For many girls in South Africa, this isn’t just a possibility, it’s their reality. Period poverty forces thousands of learners to miss school every month, disrupting their education and limiting their future opportunities.
On August 7, the Ntate Jane Foundation took a stand against this issue by hosting a pad drive at Vosloorus Comprehensive Secondary School as part of the EmpowerHer Program. The initiative provided 1,100 packets of pads to learners, ensuring they could attend school confidently and without unnecessary interruptions.
“This is more than just giving pads,” said Mahadi Mosia, founder of the foundation. “It’s about giving our girls the opportunity to succeed without barriers.”
The impact was immediate. The gratitude from the learners reflected just how much this initiative means. With access to sanitary products, these girls can now stay in school, focus on their education, and build a future without limitations.
While progress has been made, period poverty remains a widespread issue. The EmpowerHer Program not only distributes sanitary products but also provides puberty education and wellness support, ensuring girls have the resources and knowledge to navigate adolescence with confidence.
The Ntate Jane Foundation is committed to expanding this initiative and reaching more learners. With continued support, we can work towards a future where no girl misses school because of her period.
